- Fall is here. From football to food, here are 6 ways to make the most of it.
Wondering where your summer went? Not ready to pack away the sandals and leave the lazy, sweltering days of summer behind? In many parts of the country, it probably doesn’t feel like it when you step outside, but fall is officially in full swing. A time of notably cooler days and shorter nights, the season has way more to offer than falling leaves. Check out these ways to beat that awful (and quite real) autumn anxiety.
1. Football – Whether you find yourself cheering on the Friday night frenzy, rooting for your alma mater on Saturdays or sticking close to the couch on Sunday nights, the fall season is synonymous with football fever. Millions of Americans find themselves celebrating one of the country’s premiere sports, even if it’s at a pee-wee league game at a local field. With so many teams, both collegiate and pro, playing through the fall, technology and apps like ESPN College Football and NFL Mobile allow you to carry the latest stats and gridiron action with you on your mobile device while you tailgate anywhere in the world.
2. The Clothing– The kickoff to “sweater weather” in most of the U.S., fall gives men and women alike the opportunity to revaluate and reconfigure their wardrobes. Use this time of year to not only build an arsenal that will help you brave the winter chill, but also one that’s free of things you can no longer fit or have no use for…including those well-worn summer clothes. Long-trusted entities like Goodwill and Salvation Army will pick up these items from homes in most areas, but other local shelters and nonprofits are good donation options as well. For specialty items and those you prefer to sell, online thrift and consignments shops like threadUP and Gone-Tomorrow are a great way to get those items off your hands and out of drawers while giving you some cash to sock away. Who knows? Getting rid of a few guyabera shirts or maxi dresses may just be the perfect way to free up some hanging space for a new jacket or coat.
3. Pumpkin Spice EVERYTHING – Somewhere in the early aughts, pumpkin spice haphazardly became linked to crisp autumn days thanks to a certain Seattle-based coffee company and its dedicated patrons. In the years since, pumpkin spice has found its way into everything from candles to shampoo to cereal. In the case that you’re not #teamPumpkinSpiceLatte or the seasonal flavoring isn’t your thing, opt for Starbucks’ new Toasted Graham Latte to switch it up a bit or take to your kitchen and become your own barista with these drink hacks.
4. The Television – For many, fall is a succinctly beautiful time of great and new TV – a showcase of new offerings, returning favorites and a slew of fresh episodes to ultimately lead up to the dreaded winter season break. Even if you find yourself bound to your network and cable TV darlings, consider checking out some of the acclaimed programming being offered by the streaming services you probably already use. According to Vulture, streaming networks will be a bigger player than ever this fall with shows like recent Emmy-winning Transparent, Orange Is the New Black and former Fox comedy The Mindy Project at the top of the heap. Fall programming may also provide the prime reason to sign up for a streaming service, especially while some of the providers are offering special pricing leading up to the holiday season.
5. The Festivities – With hayrides, bonfires, state and county fairs and fall festivals abounding, the months prior to winter’s arrival are the perfect time to get up, get out and do something with friends and family while the weather is just right. After what’s been called the warmest summer in over 100 years, take this opportunity to fit in one last trip to the beach, try a new recipe while dining al fresco at home, check out an artisan or outdoor live music event or even see this weekend’s lunar eclipse while a light jacket and some company is all you need. You may regret not spending some quality time with Mother Nature’s milder side in the frostier days to come.
6. The Food – If summer is the time of light and refreshing fare and all things grilled, consider fall to be the foodie’s comfort zone chock full of savory soups, warm baked casseroles and decadent desserts that stick to your bones as the temperature drops. While you use this season to get reacquainted with your oven and stove top, feel free to show your slow cooker some love too. The timesaving appliance offers both seasoned chefs and novices alike the chance to create plenty of meal ideas that transfer from the kitchen table to the break room at work the next day. Meal services like Blue Apron and Home Bistro are also switching up their recipes and offering hearty comfort food favorites for families of all sizes and diet preferences.
