There were just 10 seconds left. All the Wolverines had to do was punt. The clock would run out. The game would be over. Michigan would win. That’s what everyone thought. And for one Michigan news station, just thinking it was enough.

In a Dewey Defeats Truman-esque live shot from outside Michigan Stadium Saturday night, Grand Rapids ABC station WZZM reported that Michigan had beaten in-state rival Michigan State for the first time since 2012.

“Michigan coming up with a crucial stop and they were able to run out the clock,” sports director Jamal Spencer said to the camera. “People are spilling out of Michigan Stadium into the streets of Ann Arbor celebrating.”

Only most Michigan fans were still inside the Big House, not celebrating but staring at the scoreboard in stunned silence. The punt was muffed… directly into the arms of a charging Michigan State defender who battled his way into the end zone as time expired. Final score: Michigan State 27 — Michigan 23. It was one of the most improbable finishes in college football history.

And WZZM muffed it.

“The Paul Bunyan Trophy is back in Ann Arbor for the first time since 2012,” Spencer said. “We’ll have a lot more for you from Ann Arbor coming up tonight in the 11 p.m. sportscast, Eric.”

By that point, WZZM producers had informed anchor Eric Lloyd that Spencer’s report was an embarrassing 180 degrees wrong.

“Actually Jamal, that was our mistake,” Lloyd said. “Actually, Michigan was about to punt the ball with 10 seconds left in the game and a botched snap cost them the game. And Michigan State returned it. The Spartans actually end up winning in the end. That was our mistake. We thought we had seen the game was over. We will correct that in the eleven.”

Spencer, who is actually a Michigan State fan, later owned up to the gaffe on Twitter.
