#GivingTuesday: A response to commercialization and consumerism

The Friday and Monday after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday encourage consumers to spend money. However Tuesday, December 1, 2015 marks the 4th annual Giving Tuesday, the social movement that has a global day dedicated to giving back.
Giving Tuesday is a 24-hour online campaign that encourages people to make donations to charities, volunteer and participate in other philanthropic activities. The movement focused around giving and goodwill originated in 2012 with 92Y, a nonprofit community and cultural center in New York City, in partnership with United Nations Foundation, an international organization that helps to connect the ideas and resources to help the United Nations solve global problems. With the original goal of getting 100 partners to participate, Giving Tuesday surpassed that goal and now has 30,00+ participating partners today in 68 countries.
A survey by The John Templeton Foundation found just 18 percent of Americans are familiar with Giving Tuesday. Meaning there’s a lot of room for the movement to grow.
Nonprofits, government agencies and businesses have become Giving Tuesday partners, using the hashtag #GivingTuesday and media coverage to raise awareness or money for their cause. For example Dress For Success, an international nonprofit that provides professional clothing and development tools to low-income women is promoting the hashtag #GivingTuesday along with their hashtag #GivingShoesDay in hopes of more donations.
“Twitter was the tool that connected the movement. As the initiative has rolled out, spreading the word through Twitter chats and memes have been a huge part of #GivingTuesday’s evolution and growth,” Henry Timms, founder of the movement and executive director of 92Y said.
