HYMERA, Ind. — A brawl that erupted Tuesday night at a town council meeting in Indiana is being investigated by state police, and a man accused of instigating the fight has been fired from his job as a jailer at the Sullivan County Jail.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts told the Terre Haute (Indiana) Tribune-Star that no arrests were made following the incident at a council meeting in Hymera, about 25 miles south of Terre Haute, but the investigation is expected to be completed by the end of next week. The information will then be forwarded to the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible filing of criminal charges.
Punches were reportedly thrown by former town marshal Darrick Cullison and others who attended the meeting in which the council voted to hire Daryl McCullough as the new town marshal. Video recorded by an area television news team at the meeting shows Cullison aggressively and physically confronting McCullough.
Cullison has also been terminated as a probationary non-sworn civilian employee at the Sullivan County Jail.
Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom told the Tribune-Star that Cullison was suspended last night after the incident at the town council meeting, but as of noon today, his employment was terminated.
Cullison was assigned to the midnight shift in the jail division of the sheriff’s department.
Cottom said he was not present at the council meeting, and no deputies had been requested to attend Tuesday night’s meeting
“Our department responded to the original altercation, took control of the scene and separated the parties,” Cottom said. “Last night I specifically requested the Indiana State Police conduct a complete and thorough investigation. Darrick Cullison was suspended last night with pay pending further investigation. The Indiana State Police are conducting the criminal side of the investigation. As far as [Cullison’s] employment here, he is being terminated as of 12 noon today.”
The town council had terminated Cullison as town marshal in October. He filed a lawsuit against the Hymera council, requesting back pay and the restoration of his job. Cullison’s attorney John Bodine told the Tribune-Star that the Hymera town board did not follow state-mandated procedures when voting to terminate Cullison’s employment as the town marshal on Oct. 23.
