Whether you consider yourself a bona fide math whiz or utterly lost without a calculator, there are at least 3.14 reasons to celebrate this March 14.
March 14 (3.14), better known as Pi Day, is celebrated annually around the globe in commemoration of the geometric formula that can be used to determine the circumference of a circle. First recognized in the U.S. in 1988, Pi Day became nationally recognized in 2009 after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution, dubbing it National Pi Day here in the United States.
Pi Day 2016 is notably known as “Rounded Pi Day“, which is a practically a once-in-our-liftime occurrence. The numbers of the date (3.14.16) create the first numbers of Pi when rounded to the ten-thousandth place (3.1416).
Sharing in the festive mood of the day, businesses, sports teams, celebrities and regular joes alike took to social media outlets to showcase their appreciation for the world’s most irrational number.
Some with the knack for arithmetic used the day to teach us a little more.
