PAPA, the Putnam Alliance for the Performing Arts, proudly announces its upcoming performance of “Run For Your Wife,” by Ray Cooney at The Plaza Arts Center on April 15, 16, 22, 23, at 7:30 and on April 17 at 3 p.m. PAPA is Eatonton’s community theater company which also serves the lake country area. This play is being produced by special arrangement with Samuel French Inc., New York.

An adult comedy, this farce concerns New York cab driver John Smith, with two wives, two lives and a very precise schedule for juggling them both, with one wife at home in Manhattan and another at home in Brooklyn. Only John is aware of this double life with wives he really loves…at least until he performs a heroic act. As the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.

Trouble brews when John is mugged and ends up in hospital, where both of his different addresses surface, causing both the Manhattan and Brooklyn police to investigate. Having upset his schedule, Smith becomes hopelessly entangled in his attempts to explain himself to his wives and two suspicious police officers, with help from his lazy friend and neighbor Stanley who lives in the apartment upstairs. John, played by Ed Kercado, and Stanley, played by Charlie Helms concoct a crazy story to provide cover for John, but throughout the play, the situation becomes a total mess. Other characters are Mary (Sarah Daly Weir), Barbara (Debbie McCown), Detective Troughton (Bill Necel), Detective Porterhouse (Dan Kelhoffer), Bobby (Jeffry Hunley), and a reporter (Barney Ross). These actors are all lake country locals. The play is directed by long-time PAPA Director Dennis McClain.

The action is almost nonstop as are the laughs that come from the many quips as well as cover stories for the one big lie that began with John’s inability to just say no.
