GREENSBORO — Members of the golfing community at Reynolds Lake Oconee honored the passing of their friend and golf member Steve Scovic by creating a scholarship fund in his name. The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Greene County High School graduate who will go on to college and be involved in athletics. The first recipient of the Steve Scovic Scholarship is Johnathan Evans, who will attend LaGrange College this fall, pursuing a degree in Sports Administration and playing for the football team. Jonathan is an excellent student and athlete who has attended the Pete Nance Boys & Girls Club (PNC) and has worked there as a counselor. Leading by example and encouraging PNC kids to do the right thing, even when no one is watching, Jonathan has been an inspiration to them sharing that they too can pursue their dreams.
In naming the Steve Scovic Scholarship and honoring him, the Reynolds Golf community loses a good friend. Steve was a long time resident of Reynolds Lake Oconee who graduated from the University of Dayton in 1966 and was a UD Flyer through and through. He pitched for the UD baseball team, played on the Flyers 1962 basketball team and was a Flyers basketball fan for the rest of his life. He was an educator and a true sports fanatic. Steve leaves a legacy of educating and improving the lives of countless children in the public and charter school systems of the greater Dayton area. His educational career included serving as President of Alliance Community Schools in Dayton, Ohio and serving as Superintendent of Kettering, Fairborn, and Bethel City Schools. He received multiple awards throughout his career recognizing his hard work and dedication to educating children.
The golf community at Reynolds Lake Oconee hopes this scholarship gift continues to touch and improve the lives of Green County students.
