Holidays can be hard on those who have been abused

It’s that “most wonderful time of the year” – for most of us anyway.  We are as busy as can be getting ready to celebrate the holidays with friends and family.  Greeting cards have been sent, invitations given and received, gifts carefully chosen and tucked under our decorated trees.  It’s the season of love, happiness and good cheer.

Unfortunately, not everyone has these feelings of comfort and joy.  For some, this time of the year only means their lives will be even more devastating.  For them, after spending the year in worry and fear, the holidays will only bring more sorrow and pain. These are the victims whose lives are ruled by an abuser – most are women and innocent children.  An abuser, with words or physical abuse (in most instances both), wears them down to the point where they can no longer endure their lives.  They never know what will bring on an attack, but they know that it is a regular occurrence in their lives.

In Greene County there is a place of refuge for these abused women and children, The Circle of Love Center.  This shelter accommodates women and children who have no where to turn when abuse and violence put them in fear of their lives.  In extreme cases they are sent to other counties or states for help, and in some instances – to start a new life.  The shelter serves five area counties in the Ocmulgee Circuit, Greene, Morgan, Putnam, Hancock and Baldwin.  Those in dire need can find solace and safety at The Circle of Love.

Many women and their children will look to the Center for help during this holiday season as abuse is usually at an all-time high.  Churches, charities and the people of our community have always been generous in their giving, but the daily needs of food, clothing and toiletries are always a necessity.  During this season of giving we can help the Center in many ways.  A Supermarket gift card will help replenish perishable foodstuffs such as dairy products and fresh fruits and vegetables.  A Department Store gift card will enable the Center to purchase clothing to fit size and season.  A Phone Card will allow victims to contact their families without fear of the calls being traced.  A Tax Deductible Check to the Circle of Love Center will provide help where help is most urgently needed.

Now – during this special season of joy and good will, let us remember those who are not wishing for gifts from Santa, but for a safe and secure place where they and their children can sleep in peace at night.

If you would like to help, contributions may be sent to The Circle of Love Center, Attention Jessica A Jones (Executive Director), PO Box 641, Greensboro, GA  30642.  For further information phone 706-453-4017.
