Lake Oconee Fishing Forecast- April 5

Published 2:23 pm Wednesday, April 5, 2017

Lake Conditions – The lake is clear down lake with a little stain up the rivers.

Lake Water Temperature – Upper 50s to low 60s.

Largemouth Bass – GOOD –The warm up has the fish more active. The fish have been trying to move toward shallow water in the coves to begin spawning but the recent cold weather had put a stop to that movement. Look for everything to become shallow now with the warmer weather. Just about every lure will work in the coming days. Along with jigs and spinnerbaits, small crankbaits (Shad Raps, Rat-L-Traps, square billed), soft plastics (Carolina rigs, Trick worms) and shaky heads remain good choices for the fish that have moved shallow. The Carolina rig has been the hot bait around docks recently.

Crappie –FAIR/GOOD – The crappie can be found in the mouths of the coves and into the coves. Some crappie were about ready to move into their actual spawning areas before the recent cold front. My take on the crappie spawn is that it has occurred in several phases with some crappie still waiting to spawn. In other words, the crappie spawn has been spread out over several weeks this year without a heavy spawn occurring at one time. Longlining jigs and minnows will catch both those spawning and those that have already spawned.

Striped Bass/White Bass/Hybrid Bass – GOOD –The warm weather has the fish moving to the area of the dam a little earlier than normal. Some fish remain in the River Bend area. Best baits are live bait and jigging spoons. Some fish have moved up the rivers and creeks.

Catfish – GOOD/FAIR – The catfish are primarily located in the main lake and major creeks and rivers now but will soon be moving into the mouths of the coves awaiting a little warmer water before spawning. Cut baits (bream and shad) are the best baits.
