DANVERS, Mass. — Two teenage girls are facing charges of child endangerment after a video published to Snapchat showed them putting a baby in a refrigerator and closing the door.
Danvers police Chief Patrick Ambrose said the baby is with a parent and is doing well.
“On Monday evening, around 9:30 p.m., we were contacted by the Swampscott (Massachusetts) Police Department about a video that had surfaced showing two females placing an infant in a refrigerator,” Ambrose said.
The video shows the girls place the crying baby in the fridge, close the door, laugh, then open the door and remove the child.
The girls were babysitting for a family member, said Stephen O’Connell, a spokesman for the Essex County, Massachusetts, district attorney’s office.
The investigation identified the girls, but because they’re minors, the Essex District Attorney’s office won’t be releasing any additional information, including their ages or hometowns.
On Tuesday, police arrested the girls and charged them with child endangerment and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, O’Connell said. They were arraigned in Salem, Massachusetts, Juvenile Court.
Later Wednesday afternoon, Ambrose issued a brief statement about the video — which continues to circulate online — urging media outlets not to publish it.
“Because the infant victim and family have strong privacy interests that are implicated, the video of the infant should not be released in any form,” he said.
