AUSTIN – Emergency management officials are urging residents of Houston and nearby counties who are trying to escape flood waters not to take shelter in their attics.
“If the highest floor of your home becomes dangerous … get on the roof,” said a message transmitted by the National Weather Service at the request of the city of Houston and Brazoria and Galveston counties. “Call 911 for help and stay on the line until answered.”

The National Weather Service website showed 24-hour estimated rainfall totals of anywhere from about 20 inches in Mount Houston, which is in Harris County, to almost 27 inches on Dixie Farm Road in Brazoria County.
“Catastrophic flooding is ongoing with flash flood emergencies remaining in effect,” according to the NWS site. “Continued additional catastrophic, unprecedented and life-threatening flooding is expected.
“Flash flood watches and warnings are currently in effect for all of southeast Texas.
