Lake Oconee Elks Lodge members

Lake Oconee Elks Lodge held its first annual Soccer Shoot Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Greensboro Recreational Facility, a beautiful area with a large soccer field covered in lush grass.

The day started out bright and sunny and the participants started arriving around 9 a.m. Some of the kids from the Boys & Girls Club in Greensboro were among the first to arrive in their bus. There were some very talented soccer players among the kids, which made for a great competition. The boys and girls competed separately and in different age groups. When the competition was over, everyone enjoyed a lunch of grilled hotdogs that the Lake Oconee Elks Canteen had cooked up while the competition was in progress. It was a very warm day so everyone enjoyed sitting under the covered pavilion with lunch and a cool drink.

After lunch, the trophies for first and second places were awarded.

First Place Winners: Girls – Fernanda Olvera-Santos, 8- and 9-year-old girls; Brianna Glave, 10- and 11-year-old girls; and the boys – Jonathan Trejo 5- and 7-year-old boys; Kenneth Dellinger, 8- and 9-year-old boys; Jameson McCuin 10- and 11-year-old boys; and Thomas Miller 12- and 13-year-old boys.

Second Place Winners: There was a tie for second place 8- and 9-year-old girls, Bailey Hanes and Sydney Ford. Boys – Joshua Donn 5- and 7-year-old boys; Alexander Trejo, 8- and 9-year-old boys; Jesse Bray 10- and 11-year-old boys; and Trey Thurman 12- and 13-year-old boys.

And of course, everyone received a medallion that participated.

The first place winners will advance to the State competition in Conyers on Nov. 18.

Thanks to all of the kids that came out to compete. Also thanks to chairman Bob Pluta and everyone that volunteered their time to participate in this event.  A special thanks to Mary Munday, athletic coordinator at the Greene County Recreation Department for being such a tremendous help.
