Greene County Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Oct. 13

Published 3:13 pm Saturday, September 29, 2018

St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital and TenderCare Clinic are hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. The walk is open to all community members to support our fighters, celebrate our survivors, and honor our taken. The walk will be set up similar to a Relay for Life-type event: You are invited to come walk laps in support of the cause and to raise awareness; no sign-ups are required. Different community organizations and businesses will be set up around the track with information and giveaways. BCA t-shirts will also be available to purchase at the event. This year’s theme for Breast Health Month is “Detect It, Treat It, Defeat It” in support of mammograms and early detection of breast cancer. Luminaries will be lit at sunset to honor those who we have lost to breast cancer. Please mark your calendars and plan on joining us at Tiger Stadium that evening! If you are an organization interested in having a booth at the event, or are a breast cancer survivor planning to attend, please contact Laura Ringer at 706-454-5183 or Bria Brown at 706-453-5167.

Good Samaritan and TenderCare Clinic partner to promote the Power of One, a program that provides no-cost mammograms to uninsured women in the county. Breast cancer is very prevalent in Greene County; it is the ninth leading cause of death overall, and second in those aged 45-54, yet so many go undetected and untreated. Annual well women exams and yearly mammograms help with early detection in many cases which leads to a greater chance of survival.  Breast cancer touches almost everyone in some way, so support for those affected in our community is important as we detect, treat, and defeat!

The community is also encouraged to wear pink on Friday, Oct. 19for Greene County’s annual Pink Out Day.
