On Saturday, Dec. 8, a group of Lake Oconee Elk members, along with Greene County Boy Scout Troop 30 went to the Madison County Boys and Girls Club to host a robot building party with the boys and girls from the club. It was a rainy, cold day so not everyone was able to attend that had signed up, but for those that did, all had a great time building robots.
The Lake Oconee Elks had already hosted a robot party for the Boy Scouts several weeks earlier so that the boys could learn how to build the robots in order to help the Elks with the kids at the club. The party got started by showing off a robot that had already been built. The robots were programmable so it was able to make sounds, move around, and record and play back things the kids said to it. The kids were excited to make their own to take home. The Elks and Scouts paired up with the kids and the building began. It took around two hours to get them all finished but there were a lot of proud kids showing off their robots when they put the batteries inside and the robots started making noise. The boys and girls received a medallion that showed they had graduated the robotics class and got to take a second robot home to put together at a later date, possibly showing off their new found skills to their parents or siblings.
The Lake Oconee Elks Canteen had been outside grilling hot dogs for everyone while the party was in progress and when the kids were finished, the canteen members brought in the hot dogs and set up a serving line to feed all the hungry folks that had worked up quite an appetite.
Thanks to Karen Robertson and Tabitha Lowe with the Madison County Boys and Girls Club who worked with the Lake Oconee Elks to get this party together. The Boy Scouts from Troop 30 and troop leader Jamie Grill did an excellent job helping the kids put together the robots, and thanks to all of the Elk volunteers.
