GREENSBORO, Ga. — Lake Oconee Academy’s High School Competition Theatre Troupe is preparing for their first performance of the school year, “Quilters,” a musical about a pioneer woman and her daughters. The action of “Quilters” depicts the lot of women on the frontier: girlhood, marriage, childbirth, spinsterhood, twisters, fire, illness, and death. Each scene represents a “block” of a quilt, pieced together as a legacy from the mother to her daughters. 

Last week, the LOA cast members had the unique opportunity to visit with some ladies from the Lake Oconee area who are all experienced quilters. Joan Lucas, Mary Lou Noonan, and Rosemary Seeley brought many of their prized quilts to share with the students. They spoke about the quilting process, showed the many different patterns and techniques that are used, and shared many sweet stories behind their quilts. “Getting to meet such amazing women and hear their stories was such an awesome experience,” said cast member Rylie McDonald. “Not only are they extremely talented, but also getting to hear the stories behind their quilts really changed how I view the women we get to portray in Quilters.” The afternoon concluded with the LOA cast members performing a “sneak peek” of a few scenes from the musical. “This production not only touches the hearts of quilters, but also the hearts of mothers and daughters,” said MaryLouNoonan. “ Quiltersi samust-seeshow.” 

Tickets are now on sale for “Quilters” with an afternoon performance on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, at 4:30 p.m. at Festival Hall in Greensboro. The cost $10 for adults and $7 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at LOA.TicketLeap.com and will also be available at the door. All proceeds benefit the Lake Oconee Academy Theatre Arts program. 

The Quilters cast consists of ten high school girls. Seniors – Natalie Ansley and Helen Garcia-Carreras; Juniors – Hannah Bell, Rylie McDonald, Lauren Harris, and Amelia Moon; Sophomores – Shelby Davis, Gabby Gruszynski and Ashley Moss; and Freshman – Elisa Garcia-Carreras. The production is directed by Lora Garcia-Carreras and Kelly Ingle, with accompaniment by Amy Reber.
