ON THE SCREEN: Emmy Predictions 2020
Published 9:51 pm Wednesday, September 16, 2020
The 2020 Emmy Awards will undoubtedly make history this Sunday as the first major awards show to proceed during a pandemic. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, The Emmys will be interesting to say the least, with some of the most competitive categories in Emmy history, showcasing the best of the best in contemporary television. Here are my predictions in the major categories of “what/who will win,” “what/who could win” and “what/who deserves to win.”
Comedy Series
The nominees are: “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “Schitt’s Creek”, “Insecure”, “What We Do in the Shadows,” “The Good Place,” “Dead to Me,” “The Kominsky Method” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
What will win: “Schitt’s Creek” While “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is a safe choice and previous Emmy favorite, “Schitt’s Creek” delivered a series finale that topped all of its seasons prior, sparking a cultural craze surrounding the series as well. Given its snubs in previous seasons, “Schitt’s Creek” is predicted to win. What could win: “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” What deserves to win: “Schitt’s Creek”
Comedy Actress
The nominees are: Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Linda Cardellini (“Dead to Me”) and Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”).
Who will win: Catherine O’Hara While Rachel Brosnahan is a safe choice and could very well win this award again, it is time for O’Hara to pay her dues in this category, and her performance simply cannot be topped. However, this is a strong category and anything can happen. Who could win: Rachel Brosnahan Who should win: Catherine O’Hara
Comedy Actor
The nominees are: Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Ted Danson (“The Good Place”), Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”), Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”), Don Cheadle (“Black Monday”) and Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”).
Who will win: Eugene Levy Who could win: Ramy Youssef Who deserves to win: Eugene Levy
Comedy Supporting Actress
The nominees are: Marin Hinkle (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Yvonne Orji (“Insecure”), Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”), Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”) and Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”).
Who will win: Alex Borstein If the predicted winner, Alex Borstein, wins, she will make Emmy’s history as the first woman to win this award three years in a row, and she very well can do it with her amazing role in this show. Who could win: Annie Murphy or Kate Mckinnon Who deserves to win: Annie Murphy Annie Murphy was fantastic as Alexis Rose in “Schitt’s Creek” and her character is a cultural phenomenon. Given that this is her first nomination and last chance to be nominated, Murphy very well could win.
Comedy Supporting Actor
The nominees are: Dan Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Sterling K. Brown (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Alan Arkin (“The Kominsky Method”), Mahershala Ali (“Ramy”), Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”), Andre Braugher (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and William Jackson Harper (“The Good Place”). Who will win: Dan Levy Who could win: Tony Shalhoub Who deserves to win: Dan Levy
Drama Series
The nominees are: “Ozark,” “Succession,” “The Crown,” “Better Call Saul,” “The Mandalorian,” “Killing Eve,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “Stranger Things.”
What will win: “Succession” What could win: “Ozark” What deserves to win: “Stranger Things.”Although this show has zero chance in this strong category, season three of “Stranger Things”was the best of the series thus far, and I would be so happy to see it snag this award again.
Drama Actress
The nominees are: Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), Jennifer Anniston (“The Morning Show”), Zendaya (“Euphoria”), and Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”). Who will win: Laura Linney Who could win: Jennifer Anniston Who deserves to win: Zendaya I have been a fan of Zendaya’s since I was 11-years-old and her role in “Euphoria” was groundbreaking and proved her to be the actress of her generation. Seeing Zendaya win would be the best thing to come out of 2020 for me, and many other fans.
Drama Actor
The nominees are: Jeremy Strong (“Succession”), Sterling K. Brown (“This is Us”), Brian Cox (“Succession”), Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Billy Porter (“Pose”) and Steve Carell (“The Morning Show). Who will win: Jeremy Strong Who could win: Brian Cox Who deserves to win: Jason Bateman
Drama Supporting Actress
The nominees are: Meryl Streep (“Big Little Lies”), Laura Dern (“Big Little Lies”), Thandie Newton (“Westworld”), Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Samira Wiley (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Julie Garner (“Ozark”), Fiona Shaw (“Killing Eve”) and Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”). Who will win: Helena Bonham Carter Who could win: Julia Garner Who deserves to win: Laura Dern Although Dern has won this award in the past, critics are claiming that her Oscar win this past season is too recent for her to win again, but I personally would love to see her take home the award.
Drama Supporting Actor
The nominees are: Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”), Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), Bradley Whitford (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Matthew Macfayden (“Succession”), Giancarlo Esposito (“Better Call Saul”), Jeffrey Wright (“Westworld”), Nicholas Braun (“Succession”), and Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”). Who will win: Billy Crudup Who could win: Kieran Culkin, or really anyone from “Succession” Who deserves to win: Nicholas Braun
