Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) presents educational arts programming to students throughout rural Georgia at no charge. In past years, the performances were held at various locations, including Rock Eagle, Festival Hall and The Plaza Arts Center. This school year, OPAS proactively planned for online performance experiences to engage the students and educators in our community. OPAS serves over 2,000 children each year; they estimate doubling their outreach with online programming.
To view programs visit www.opas.org – the video will be located on the homepage for your viewing convenience from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the date of the performance. OPAS welcomes all students to participate; if you are interested in program study guides for your student(s), please email Sandra Meng at smeng@opas.org.
Sons of Mystro | 6th – 12th Grade Thursday, Feb. 25, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Born in South Florida to a Jamaican father and Barbadian mother, Malcolm, 23, and his 20-year-old brother Umoja learned to play the violin through South Florida’s public school system. Together, these brothers are Sons of Mystro. They use their violins to interpret reggae classics, American pop songs, and their own creations accompanied by a DJ & a drummer. They are winners of the Emerging Artist under 21yrs Old award at IRAWMA (International Reggae and World Music Awards). Their debut recording, “Reggae Strings” is available wherever music is streamed or sold. Mentored by Hip Hop Duo Black Violin, these artists’ stars are on the rise.
OPAS fills the void for thousands of children in Greene, Putnam, Baldwin, and Taliaferro Counties by providing much-needed fine arts educational programming that they would not experience otherwise. OPAS’s mission is to entertain, enrich, and educate the community in the performing arts. As a nonprofit cultural arts organization, OPAS depends on sponsors, members, contributors, and ticket buyers’ generous support to continue its mission of bringing superlative performing arts to Lake Oconee and arts education experiences for local school children. Thank you to our members and partners, Publix Charities, the Georgia Council for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the arts provide special funding to our education programming. “This program is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. Georgia Council for the Arts also receives support from its partner agency – the National Endowment for the Arts.” “This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.” To find more information about OPAS and upcoming events, visit www.opas.org.
