The Greene County Food Pantry opened its doors to the community in 2007. With a small facility, provided by the Greensboro Housing Authority, and $5,000, a few bundles of grocery bags, and a little shelving, donated by Kroger, a small group of volunteers began a journey that continues today.
The food pantry partnership with Kroger has continued for 14 consecutive years, with countless number of paper and plastic bags, cases of donated food, 24 weeks of fresh milk during the 2020 pandemic crisis and yearly cash donations. The 2021 donation of $10,000 in Kroger Gift Cards signifies a continuation of Kroger support for the Food Pantry and the community. With the latest $10,000, Kroger’s 14 years of cash donations exceed $150,000.
The Greene County Food Pantry welcomes the donation of Kroger Gift Cards, as an additional source for purchasing product, that is often not available through regular monthly purchases from the “Feeding America” food bank warehouse in Augusta. The gift cards also play a big part in procuring product for the Food Pantry’s special Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.
The Greene County Food Pantry supports a large community of people in need: children, low- income families and senior citizens who are 60 years of age or older. The pantry serves more than 1000 individuals representing over 500 families each month.
The Greene County Food Pantry is a 501©3 non profit organization who welcomes support from individuals, organizations, churches and businesses here in the local community. The need is ever growing, as the pantry strives to provide more nutritional meals; prepares for the holidays; encounters a new challenge with increased food costs/inflation; and seeks support for a special capital campaign to replace an aging refrigerated truck.
