- Michael Feinstein
Known for his critically-acclaimed performances, television appearances, and Grammy nominations, Michael Feinstein is no stranger to the spotlight. The Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) is thrilled to present him to local audiences on Jan. 14, 2022. Celebrated as the premiere interpreter of the Great American Songbook, Feinstein’s career is also defined by his hard work as an archivist and his support of music education.
His founding of “The Great American Songbook Foundation” is a testament to his character, stewardship, and commitment to service. This renowned nonprofit preserves the legacy of timeless American jazz and pop classics from the 20th century and supports performing arts education through a variety of programs, scholarships, and research opportunities.
Supporting Our Youth
As part of his efforts at “The Great American Songbook Foundation,” Feinstein introduced an annual summer intensive for high school students entitled “The Songbook Academy.” This week-long program connects students with world-class musicians and educators, including Feinstein himself. Through the intensive, Feinstein also offers scholarship opportunities for top performers.
Additionally, Feinstein routinely hosts performances and concerts for students. In some instances, he even performs alongside promising young singers. In turn, he brings new life to a host of legendary American songs and compositions, instilling a sense of cultural preservation into our youth.
Working with Ira Gershwin
Feinstein’s commitment to younger generations is reminiscent of his working relationship with the legendary Ira Gershwin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning lyricist, brother to George. At the start of his career, Feinstein was entrusted by Gershwin to catalog his records, including a host of never-before-heard songs. His work with Gershwin led to his first-ever studio album in 1987, “Pure Gershwin.”
Through Gershwin, Feinstein connected with several nationally and internationally-recognized performers and songwriters. Having been discovered at an early age, his talent blossomed throughout New York City, Hollywood, and across the globe.
Serving as Artistic Director
Today, Feinstein continues his multifaceted career as the Artistic Director for The Center for the Performing Arts. Dedicated to inspiring Central Indiana and beyond through captivating live performances, this remarkable venue has opened its doors to audiences of all ages, hosting over 2,300 performances to date.
As the Artistic Director, Feinstein oversees the selection process for each performance, ensuring uncompromising authenticity and engagement at every opportunity. While hosting a diverse assortment of performers and concert series, Feinstein provides the accessibility and affordability of shows in an ongoing effort to celebrate and preserve classic entertainment. In addition to this work, Feinstein is the conductor and music director at The Pasadena Pops, following in the footsteps of Marvin Hamlisch.
