HEMBREE: Here’s to the New Year!

Published 5:52 pm Wednesday, January 26, 2022

Around this time we all hear talks of resolutions, goals, new trends, the dreaded diet word. It happens every year as we get closer to one year ending and a new one beginning.

I don’t know about y’all, but I truly haven’t made any New Year’s resolutions in the past year because my goal was simply to get through it. Get through working from home, get through not seeing my friends and family, get through COVID, but this year I definitely have some resolutions.

Some of mine include being kinder, loving my fiance better and yes, going on a dreaded wedding diet.

But also, my list includes enjoying each moment more, being more present — one way or another, putting down my phone. This almost seems like an impossible task as it is literally part of my job to be on social media, but I have some ideas.

Here are a few: 1. Be less reactive to controversial social media posts — just scroll on by. 2. Stop checking snapchat every hour. Yes, my FOMO (fear of missing out) is real, but I want to stay in the present where I am. 3. Check my own personal social accounts less.

I think that sometimes during the year it is easy to forget about our goals that we have created at the beginning. It’s totally normal.

But, I would like to challenge you with a goal for 2022.

Support your local theater.

Here are some ways you can do that:

1. Buy tickets to shows (The Plaza’s full 2022 lineup is out now)

2. Send a kid, grandkid to Second Saturday Crafts – this happens (like the name suggests) every second saturday of the month. It is a FREE craft activity that kids make alongside some adult volunteers.

3. Like us and interact with posts on social media. You can find The Plaza on Facebook and Instagram. We are on Facebook as ‘Plaza Arts Center’ and on Instagram as ‘theplazaartscenter.’

4. Make a donation. The Plaza runs off of donations. Whether becoming a member or making a one time donation, your monetary support keeps us going.

and finally,

5. Stop by and see The Plaza for yourself. The Plaza staff is in the office Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. We would love to show you around.

As we say goodbye to 2021, let’s try and welcome 2022 with open arms and open hearts.

Here’s to a new year!
