5 things I wish people knew

There are several things that I don’t know — a lot — but I have gathered a very short list of things that I wish people knew.
- Art is for everyone. Whatever gender, age or socioeconomic status — art is for you. You can go outside and pick up a stick and draw in the dirt — that’s art. You can get the finest paints and the best handmade canvas to paint — that’s art. You can sing at the top of your lungs after a hellish day at work — that’s art. Wherever and whoever you are, you can appreciate (and create art.)
- Not every hobby has to make money. Sure, it’s nice to make money with stuff you like doing, but not every hobby you have has to become a side hustle. I love to make collages from magazines, old boOKs, etc. I don’t even try to sell these, but I love doing it. Sometimes when you try to make money from everything, it becomes a task instead of an enjoyment.
- Being creative can be tiring. Ever heard of writer’s block? It’s a real thing. Even when you are making art, your mental capacity can get limited. For me, when I work on graphic designs, I have about four hours of good work in me. Then, I have to switch to something else. Creative blocks are real. Give yourself a break when these happen.
- It’s OK to say no. Does someone want a commissioned piece, but something just feels off? It’s OK to say no. Is a friend asking for a discount on you work? It’s OK to say no. Phew, that’s a tough one. Does a client want something way beyond your scope of ability? It’s OK to say no. Protect your peace when it comes to your art. If you can’t do something, it’s OK to say that. Your time is valuable and so are you.
- It’s never too late (or too early) to try something new. Want to learn how to live paint an event? Let’s learn it! Want to try your hand at guitar? OK! Want to try your hand at pastry making? I’ll be your taste tester. Get out there and try something new — it won’t hurt. Learn to laugh at yourself. It’s OK to mess up, in fact it’s more fun that way!
There’s plenty of other things that I don’t know. But, lots of these things can be tried out at The Plaza. Whether it’s participating in a PAPA production or trying your hand at bartending as a volunteer, there is always something to do here at The Plaza and we invite and encourage you to join us. Let’s create together!
