It’s the busiest time on the Georgia High School Association calendar, the spring sports season that begins while there’s still a lot of chill in the air late January.
With some of Georgia finally feeling some warm days, those spring sports are close to naming champions for the 2021-22 school year. Lake Oconee Academy finds its name mentioned time and again as the playoffs move from round to round, and one Titan squad was agonizingly close to the final round.
Last Friday, the Lake Oconee Academy boys soccer team, the second-place team from its GHSA Class A Public region (8), hosted Drew Charter, a school from a tough soccer region that already had one finalist, Dalton Academy, which knocked out defending champion Georgia Military College Prep 2-1.
Drew Charter won the match 3-2 after a scoreless first half. Titan goals came from Kyle Beasley and Leonardo Perez.
But it’s not over in Titan athletics. Lake Oconee Academy boys tennis is playing at Screven County High in Sylvania in the GHSA A Public semifinals. Titan victories in the playoffs have been against Bowdon High, Clinch County and Seminole County, which was the only school so far to win an individual match on the Titans.
The state tennis finals are May 14 in Rome, and the LOA-Screven winner meets Irwin County or Telfair County.
On April 25, Lake Oconee Academy’s boys and girls golf teams, defending state champions, won their area championships with Kelli Scheck and Colby Bennett claiming low medalist honors. The Titan boys will play for the A Public championship at Georgia Southern University and the girls at Willow Lake Golf Club in Metter May 16-17.
