The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people to pray for their nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by Pres. Harry S. Truman. The task force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families.
This year’s local event was held on Thursday, May 5, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Lakepoint Community Church Worship Center in Eatonton. Fourteen pastors from different churches each provided a prayer prepared or selected specifically for the event.
The event began with welcoming comments by National Day of Prayer Coordinator Fran D’Antonio and Senior Pastor of Lakepoint Community Church, Rob Reiner, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by Mike D’Antonio. The praying was started with the call to prayer by the blowing of the Shofar three times by John Evanovich followed by the pastors praying in order.
The participating pastors were:
Mark Jones III – First Baptist Church Greensboro, Tim Oliver – Lakeside Baptist Church Milledgeville, Rosa Sides substituting for Josh Linsey – Wesley Chapel, AJ Bryant – Ark of God House of God Ministry, Meg Jackson Clark – First Presbyterian Church Greensboro, Doctor Ford G’Senger – First Presbyterian Church Union Point, Father Michael Silloway – Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, Avis Williams – Bethlehem Baptist Church, Herman Laguins – Hill Chapel Church, Mayor Corey Williams – Mt.
