- Camp Broadway is huge success
Camp Broadway was a hit this year with our biggest year yet. The Plaza was happy to team up with The Arts Barn again to bring this camp to life.
Campers third through eighth grade enjoyed singing, dancing and acting all week. This year, they got to help paint the set, pick out costumes and learn a little more of the back stage experience that goes into live theater.
“Camp Broadway has been a wonderful professional opportunity working in the theatre industry,” Helen Garcia-Carreras, a Camp Broadway counselor said. “Being new in the industry, it can be hard to find a job, especially in a leadership position. However, at Camp Broadway, I got to put many of my skills to use, especially set painting and choreographing. Additionally, I’ve applied and learned skills in classroom management. The youth staff has a large hand in how the camp is run and has the opportunity to lead certain components or activities of the day; being able to build a show with peers from my community with a passion for theatre and education is simply magical. I had a blast working with the kids, helping them find the actor in themselves through play and personal connection. They really do put forth their best effort and are beyond excited to be there (as are us counselors). I can’t wait for next year!”
The kids truly loved the experience, and it showed when they took the stage. Their performance of ‘Stone Soup’ was open to the public and patrons who didn’t even have kids in the program walked away saying ‘what a great kids’ show!’ And that’s what we love to hear at The Plaza.
Camp Broadway continues to be a hit each year and many kids want to return every summer. The Arts Barn does a great job running this summer camp each year and The Plaza is grateful for the partnership with such a great arts organization.
