On Monday, Oct. 3,Greene County Habitat celebrated World Habitat Day with a mortgage burning ceremony at the home of LaWanda Rowland.
It was a simple ceremony for Habitat, but it was truly incredible for Rowland. Here is what she shared with the more than thirty friends and family gathered in her backyard:
“Good evening, everyone. First and foremost, I want to thank God for such a special accomplishment. To my family and friends, I want to thank you for your support as I celebrate the burning of my mortgage. Thank you, Habitat for Humanity and all the other organizations that played a role in me becoming a homeowner. This is such an honor. The road to homeownership has not been easy, but I was determined and dedicated to achieving this goal in my life. I wish I had my parents here to celebrate with me along with others. I want to send out a word of encouragement to the new and upcoming homeowners — Stay the course and finish strong. Nothing is given for free. We work hundreds of hours; we attended classes and workshops to learn the tools that will help us succeed. We work hard to build not only our home but homes for our neighbors. Through hard work, perseverance, and faith you can reach your goals of homeownership. Thank you again for sharing this joyous time with me. May God bless you all.”
