GREENSBORO, Ga. — The Greensboro Business Association is excited to announce the inaugural Mardi Gras on Main event on Saturday, Feb. 18, in downtown Greensboro. The event will include a jambalaya and gumbo cookoff, with public tasting and voting beginning at noon and an awards ceremony at 3 p.m.
The Greensboro Business Association (GBA) is a non-profit organization comprised of business owners in downtown Greensboro. The GBA exists to be a self-sustaining, non-profit spokesperson for the greater Greensboro business community, encompassing all businesses within the Greensboro, Georgia city limits and interested businesses within the immediate area.
The organization seeks to provide opportunities for the continuing economic development of the Greensboro historic downtown area, as well as adjoining historic districts and areas surrounding the city, and cooperate in activities with other organizations such as the City of Greensboro, Greene County and Main Street Program.
The Mardi Gras on Main event is the first of many community-focused events that will be hosted by the GBA in 2023. Home cooks and professional chefs are encouraged to participate in the jambalaya and gumbo cook-off. Registration is available online at gbageorgia.com. Interested parties can register online or print an application and submit it with their registration fee to Lake & Local at 104 S. Main St.
Those participating in the cook-off will arrive at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, and begin cooking. A 3- to 5-gallon pot of gumbo and a pan of jambalaya will need to be ready for public tasting by noon, which will be kicked off with a presentation by Greene County High School’s marching band. Visitors will register for the public tasting, then sample all of the delicious recipes created by each chef, casting their votes on their favorites. Guest judges, including Mayor Corey Williams, will also cast their votes, with the final tally being counted and awards announced at 3 p.m.
In addition to the cook-off and tasting, downtown merchants will be offering specials and giveaways throughout the day. Visitors are encouraged to shop local merchants including J. H. McCommons, Lake & Local, Genuine Georgia, Maggie Lane, The Pink Stitch, Broad St. and Main Antiques, and Bonnie’s Coffee Shop & More.
Shopping begins at 10 a.m.; tasting tickets go on sale at 11 a.m. and the public tasting runs from noon to 2 p.m. with an awards ceremony at 3 p.m. The cookoff and tasting will be held in the parking lot behind Hair Creations located at 110 S. Main St., across from the post office.
