In 2015, Greg and Anna Lawton partnered with ATLAS Ministry to administer THE LAWTON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND. The Lawton family established a minimum 10-year commitment that awards qualified students in Greene County the opportunity to pursue their college and vocational dreams. Students are able to fulfill their educational requirements for up to four years provided they continue to meet the obligations of the scholarship. Today, it remains one of the largest private scholarships available to students in Greene County. The Lawtons chose ATLAS Ministry because it has long had a comprehensive approach to transforming the lives of individuals in Greene County from birth through high school and beyond.
Greg & Anna Lawton said at the beginning of this journey, “We feel blessed to connect with students in Greene County where this Scholarship Fund can INSPIE them to ASPIRE TO PURSUE THEIR EDUCATIONAL GOALS WITHOUT UNDUE FINANCIAL BURDEN.”
Hard work, focus, and attention to task across the history of the Lawton Scholarship program clearly shows that this leads to attainment of goals. Scholars have maintained an overall GPA of 3.6 or better in each semester, making academic achievement a large factor in the overall success of the program.
From the announcement of the first two Lawton Scholars in May, 2015, the program has awarded up to four scholarships each year. Six (6) Lawton Scholars have already completed their four-year college degrees with three graduating Magna Cum Laude. Four are employed in their degree fields and are experiencing success in teaching, business management, city government programs and as a professional flight instructor. Two Scholars have entered graduate studies in their chosen fields and are continuing to complete Master’s Degrees.
One key component to the Scholarship Program is the importance the Lawtons place on mentoring each Scholar. This unique program feature allows the family to keep in touch with the Scholars throughout their school careers and beyond via Zoom calls, emails, texts, phone calls and personal catch-ups to provide helpful counsel. The Scholars regularly comment that this feature is really appreciated and they have seen this additional connection make a difference on their journey through school and beyond.
The Lawton Scholarship is available to any graduating senior from Greene County High School, Nathanael Greene Academy and Lake Oconee Academy who meets the requirements to apply. It is a competitive scholarship that addresses students’ work in academics, leadership and community service as well as their involvement with ATLAS Ministry, from taking classes to volunteering.
