Greene County Habitat for Humanity, Inc. dedicated its 67th new home for the Wright Family and its 68th new home for the Nesbitt Family in Greene County on May 7,  in Union Point. The Wright family home was constructed with funds raised by the 2021 Lake Oconee Showcase of Homes. The Nesbitt family home was sponsored by Pennington Seed, Whirlpool, Publix Super Markets Charities, Lake Oconee Church and the 2021 Lake Oconee Showcase of Homes.

Darnesia Nesbitt and Talekia Wright, Habitat’s newest homeowners, contributed over 300 hours of “sweat equity” to the construction of their homes and others in the homeownership program. They also participated in homeownership classes and community service events to raise awareness of the Habitat homeownership model.  Partner families who complete the program are sold a home with a no-interest mortgage.  Mary Beth Schmidt, a mentor for Talekia in the Habitat partner family program said, “I found Talekia to be determined, focused, a hard worker and a great role model for her son.   I am so glad I got to know her.”  Nina Lawrence, a mentor for Darnesia in the Habitat partner family program said, “she has worked so hard for this, a place to call home for her family.”

Upon receiving the keys, both families thanked God and their family support system for guiding them on this journey.

Greene County Habitat for Humanity has constructed and sold homes in Greene County for more than twenty years. Funds for construction are generated by the Lake Oconee Showcase of Homes, through retail sales at the Habitat ReStore, and with generous donations from our community churches, business, individuals, and service organizations.  For more information about the Showcase of Homes visit the website:  https://lakeoconeeshowcaseofhomes.org/ and for store hours or to donate to the next homes visit:  https://www.habitatgreene.net/.
