The Lake Oconee Elks Lodge gave the residents of the Georgia War Veterans Home a grilled luncheon on Wednesday, May 3. The Elks served hot dogs, hamburgers and brats to 59 veterans and about 20 staff members. There were about 21 Elks volunteers who helped the veterans out to the pavilion. They served them luncheon and sat swapping stories of being overseas and serving in the military. It came as a surprise when resident and Army Veterans, Mr. Kenneth Murphy who is 96 years old, pulled out his harmonica and started playing some old tunes and ballads while everyone cheered him on enjoying the music. No luncheon is complete without peach cobbler, and it did not disappoint. It was a beautiful day of friendship, food and entertainment. The Elks Lodge has enjoyed many years of serving veterans at the veterans home as well as the VA in Dublin. It’s a small price to pay for those who bravely served our country.
