The U.S. Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

The Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties offers a free service to collect and properly dispose of any worn or damaged flags. The Rotary Club will collect old flags at the locations listed below. Local Boy Scouts Troops and Lake Oconee Elks Lodge will conduct the proper flag disposal ceremonies. This year marks the 15th year of the program. To date, the Club has collected over 3,000 flags.

To dispose of an old flag, simply drop it off at any of the following locations: Greene – Greene County Board of Education, 101 E. 3rd Street, Greensboro 706-453-7688; Greene – Herald Journal, 107 North Main, Greensboro 706-453-7988; Greene – Coldwell Banker Lake Oconee Realty, 2800 Reynolds Walk Trail, Greensboro 706-252-8020; Putnam – Eatonton Messenger, 100 North Jefferson, Eatonton 706-485-3501; Putnam – The Peoples Bank, 2095 South Jefferson Street, Eatonton 706-485-8542; and The Peoples Bank, 995 Lake Oconee Parkway, Eatonton 706-485-8542.
