OUTDOORS: Summertime fishing

I realize we have been discussing wake boating, manners, food and many other things lately but no fishing reports and no fishing content relating to the Lake Country. Well let’s fix that today!

Fishing is still excellent in the lake country. Stripers, hybridsand white bass are biting umbrella rigs and mini-Macks. Yep. Minis! These little rigs are absolutely my go-to and the go-to for many other guides just about year around, folks. Capt. Mack knocked it out of the park with these. Troll these with the big motor right now and work some of the deeper areas and the points around the main lake.

Next iscasting dock lights down at Sinclair. Now, for my money I am going to be tossing two things mostly. A ¼ ounce Spot Choker underspin rigged with a Zoom Fluke or fluke type bait from my buddy Kevin Underwood or Kevin Badget or a ¼ ounce rat-l-trap. Those are the first baits I am going to try. Next up would be a ¼ ounce bucktail. I love bucktails but not everyone agrees with me. However, there is a bucktail box on my boat, and it’s there for many reasons all year and for all my fresh and salt trips. I really like white bucktails, pink ones, white with pink heads, chartreuse heads etc. Keep it simple but they work!

Starting here soon on Oconee you will begin seeing the white bass and a few hybrids that hang with them start busting top water at first light and last light. I generally look for these fish around long points and shallow flats next to deep water. They will use these structures to push bait to the surface and eat them! So get out early and stay out late!!! When you find these fish, I love to throw ¼ or 1/8 ounce rooster tails, ¼ ounce rat-l-traps, ¼ ounce spot choker underspins, and ¼ ounce Storm minnows (especially the little curly tail ones). These fish are a blast on light tackle so rig up accordingly.

How many of you are in town this weekend and looking for something to do? Well, The Boat Shops at Lake Oconee and RIDE are partnering up and having a massive black party for our grand openings this Friday afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m. We will have food trucks, axthrowing, and Scott Deering and the Usual Suspects will provide the music to groove to! Y’all come see me and Laurel Seheult and say hello! We are raffling off a lot of items to benefit the Humane Society down here as well. Trust me y’all don’t want to miss this.

Now on a final note… The greatest time of year is here!Yes! Fresh corn!If you don’t have a garden, friends or family that do or know someone you can steal from, I truly feel sorry for you right now. My wife’s corn and zucchini have been busting at the seams. Now I will willingly share zucchini and cucumbers, but corn is another matter entirely. I recently told the owner of RIDE (Laurel) who has become a good friend that if my family gave you corn that meant you were in like Flint. This year the crop has been unreal, except for tomatoes and it seems all the rain really played havoc on them. We’re struggling to get a good tomato sandwich together! Times is hard folks! But the corn is making up for it.
