Food insecurity refers to the inability to access sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
As a community service, the Greene County Food Pantry strives to promote nutrition by providing canned goods, rice, beans, pasta, cereal, fruit, meat, bread, and other items in adequate quantities to serve as a few meals every month for the residents of Greene County.
Every month, more than 550 families — nearly 11,000 individuals — receive food from the Greene County Food Pantry. The pantry is solely run on donations and volunteers from within the community.
The Greene County Food Pantry accumulates over 1,800 pounds in food donations every month — 2,500 pounds of produce and 1,500 pounds of food is bought from Golden Harvest. What else is needed is to buy using monetary donation from donors. Clients can receive food only once per time. Clients must provide documentation to qualify for the food pantry.
The Greene County Food Pantry was founded in 2007, as a 501c3, nonprofit, tax-deductible organization. We serve all that qualify for assistance and are especially partial to senior citizens. Over 40 percent of the clients are seniors.
Tonya McWhorter serves as the Greene County Food Pantry coordinator. Dasiania Bell serves as assistant coordinator, and Steve Peluso serves as board president.
The Greene County Food Pantry is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and is located at 519 Martin Luther King Drive in downtown Greensboro. To donate food or volunteer, visit www.greenecountyfoodpantry.org or call 706-453-1380 or email at gcfoodpantry@yahoo.com.
