Greensboro, Ga. — Jumaane Smith, acclaimed trumpeter and musical virtuoso, graced the Greene County High School Auditorium with an unforgettable MasterClass, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of 80 aspiring musicians.
The event, held on Nov. 14, showcased Smith’s extraordinary talent and provided an intimate setting for students to gain insights into his artistic process.
The MasterClass began with Smith impressing the students with a dazzling trumpet performance, setting the stage for an enriching and educational experience. Smith delved into the intricacies of concert preparation, sharing personal anecdotes and professional tips that captivated the student’s attention and fueled their passion for music. Smith has been the lead trumpeter for Michael Buble for nearly 20 years and has an advanced degree from Juilliard, mentored by Winton Marsalis.
A highlight of the MasterClass was the hands-on interaction between Smith and the students. He worked directly with a young Greene County trumpeter, offering guidance and inspiration while also collaborating with two flutists, focusing on musicianship and breath control. The exchange of ideas and techniques provided a unique learning opportunity for all participants.
Following the class, Smith engaged in a lively question-and-answer session, offering students the chance to delve deeper into the world of professional music. Attendees were also treated to a meet-and-greet and photo session with the legendary trumpeter
“Greene County School System greatly appreciates OPAS and their commitment to enriching the arts experience for our students and surrounding districts, and I am eagerly looking forward to future events and opportunities that OPAS has in store for our students to explore their creative and artistic sides. We are truly fortunate to have partners like OPAS who contribute significantly to our students’ cultural and educational development,” expressed Dr. Laurie Weaver, STEM coordinator of the Greene County School District.
Smith’s visit elevated the musical spirit in Greene County and reinforced the importance of mentorship and collaboration in nurturing artistic excellence. Smith will return on March 22, as the featured guest artist in the popular OPAS Lounge Series.
