There are several compelling reasons to consider fostering animals, but Freckles’ story highlights the benefits of fostering.

Freckles, a shy 20-pound beagle-mix, came to Lake Oconee Humane Society via Greene County animal control. He was alone and afraid. LOHS felt he had a good chance of being adopted, but his shyness was difficult to overcome in the shelter and he often cowered in the corner when someone approached his kennel. Freckles was a good candidate for fostering.

After a few fits and starts, he was a changed dog. Freckles loves other dogs, and eventually their humans. He learned to explore without running away and became a better walker. He was a good eater and housebroken — Freckles was the perfect house guest. He would play all day with his foster siblings, became completely comfortable in each home and community — everyone knew and adored Freckles. He defined his happy places — hiding in the pine straw, going for golf cart rides and “sharing” his foster siblings’ beds/toys.

How did fostering help Freckles?

• Saved lives by providing space that allowed LOHS to be able to pull animals into the shelter. Fostering provided a temporary home giving Freckles a chance to thrive.

• Prepared Freckles for adoption, a crucial role for foster homes. He received individualized attention and socialization, which brought him out of his shell and increased his chances of finding a permanent home. Foster families provide valuable insights into an animal’s personality, behavior, and needs, making it easier to match them with the right adopters.

• Eliminated Freckles shake resulting from “shelter shock” — reaction to the load noise and chaos associated with a shelter environment.

• Provided a safe and nurturing environment where Freckles was able to heal and regain trust in humans.

• As Freckles overcame his shyness by building trust with a few families. During his adoption, he easily met his new family, with his tail up and wagging — no longer cowering in the corner.

Fostering Freckles also:

• Provided joy and fulfillment to the families that shared Freckles fostering. Watching a scared animal transform into a happy, confident pet is profoundly rewarding and knowing that you played a part in their journey is deeply satisfying.

• Created animal advocates in the community as the foster families were shameless in promoting Freckles via social media, walks and golf cart rides. Many people were “invested in” his adoption.
