The Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) proudly presents a thrilling performance of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” The concert will feature Tony Award-winning pianist and conductor Stuart Malina, alongside his son, the immensely talented Zev Malina, who is fresh from his debut at Carnegie Hall.
The highly anticipated performance promises to be a night of musical brilliance, celebrating the legacy of Gershwin’s iconic composition. “Rhapsody in Blue,” a masterpiece that fuses classical and jazz elements, is one of the most beloved works in American music history. In this unique four-handed rendition, Stuart and Zev Malina will showcase their exceptional artistry and deep familial connection as they bring the music on a single piano to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the piece written in 1924. Additionally, the concert will feature other selections from George and Ira Gershwin’s catalog of popular songs and music from “Porgy and Bess.”
A Musical Family Legacy
Stuart Malina, known for his dynamic musicianship and charismatic stage presence, has enjoyed a distinguished career as a pianist and conductor. Reflecting on his excitement for this performance, he shared:
“I’m always thrilled to return to OPAS, my friend Doug LaBrecque, and the wonderful people I’ve met during my visits to Lake Oconee. This time will be particularly sweet for me in that I get to perform some of my favorite music of all time and with my son!
I have a long relationship with the music of George Gershwin. With the possible exception of Franz Schubert, Gershwin is, in my opinion, the greatest songwriter of all time. I grew up in a household where we frequently sang Gershwin tunes at the piano. I’ve conducted well over a hundred performances of ‘Porgy and Bess,’ and I’ve performed most of his piano and orchestral music. ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ was the piece with which I made my Carnegie Hall debut. The beautiful four-hands arrangement we will be performing is one that I’ve been playing since I was in high school.
My son, Zev, and I have been playing piano four-hands since he was a young child. He’s a terrific pianist and a great collaborator. Having the opportunity to make music with my child has been one of the great treats of my life. This should be a very special performance!”
Introducing Zev Malina: A Rising Star in Composition and Performance
At just 22 years old, Zev Malina has already made a name for himself as an emerging American composer and pianist. His impressive accolades include the prestigious ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award (2020), two National Young Composers’ Challenge awards (2017, 2018, orchestral division), and first prize in the Jazz/Ragtime category of the 12th Fidelio Piano Composition Competition. Renowned ensembles have performed his compositions, including the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Syracuse Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic, and The Florida Orchestra. Most recently, his “Fantasy for Cello and Double Bass,” “Togetherness” premiered at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in December 2024.
A recent Shepherd School of Music graduate at Rice University, Zev studied composition with esteemed professors Arthur Gottschalk, Richard Lavenda, Karim Al-Zand and Anthony Brandt. His deep understanding of music and his passion for performance make him an exciting addition to the OPAS stage.
