For many Americans, the day begins with a rinse of mouthwash — a quick step in the daily hygiene routine. But recently, a growing number of people have been turning to a more natural alternative: oil pulling. This centuries-old Ayurvedic technique has gained popularity as individuals seek holistic, chemical-free ways to support oral health.

Originating in India as part of the Ayurvedic system of medicine, oil pulling is the practice of swishing oil — typically coconut, sesame, or sunflower — in the mouth for up to 20 minutes. Though it may sound unconventional, proponents say the benefits are both real and far-reaching. The process is believed to reduce harmful bacteria, loosen plaque, and draw toxins from the mouth and body, resulting in a cleaner, healthier oral environment.

Though scientific research on oil pulling is still developing, anecdotal reports and emerging studies suggest that it may:

—Freshen breath

—Reduce plaque and gingivitis

—Improve gum health and reduce bleeding

—Whiten teeth naturally

—Ease inflammation and heal cracked lips

—Strengthen teeth and gums

—Decrease tooth sensitivity

—Boost the immune system

One study published in the Journal of the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry found that oil pulling significantly reduced levels of Streptococcus mutans, a primary contributor to tooth decay. Importantly, there are no known adverse effects of oil pulling on dental work, like fillings or crowns.

Advocates of Ayurvedic medicine believe that because different sections of the tongue correspond to internal organs — similar to reflexology—oil pulling may also contribute to overall systemic detoxification, though more research is needed in this area.

When it comes to oiling pulling, coconut oil is a favorite choice thanks to its pleasant taste and natural antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Look for organic, virgin (unrefined) coconut oil for maximum benefits. Getting started is simple:

  1. Use 1 tablespoon of oil. If you’re just beginning, start with 1 teaspoon and work up as you’re comfortable.
  2. Swish gently in your mouth for five minutes. As you become more accustomed to the process, you can extend the time up to 20 minutes. Don’t gargle or swallow.
  3. Spit the oil into the trash, not the sink, to avoid plumbing issues.
  4. Rinse with warm water, optionally mixed with sea salt for extra antimicrobial support.
  5. Brush and floss as usual.

The best time to oil pull is first thing in the morning before eating or drinking, but consistency matters more than timing. Aim to oil pull three to four times per week. Many people find it easiest to do while showering — no talking, no multitasking, just time to let the oil work its magic.

To improve flavor or enhance benefits, you can add a drop or two of safe essential oils:

—For everyday use: peppermint, lemon, wild orange

—For infections or inflammation: tea tree, clove, or cinnamon

(Make sure any oils you use are labeled for internal use.)

Oil pulling can be a valuable addition to your oral hygiene routine. When combined with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, it may help prevent cavities, freshen breath, and support overall wellness. In a world where people are increasingly mindful of what goes into their bodies, this ancient practice offers a simple, natural way to elevate your dental care.
