Dave Thillen has presented scholarships to two students who graduated from Greene County High School May 21. These young women who live in Habitat homes have demonstrated outstanding leadership and academic abilities. They have been assisted by volunteer Thillen who helps every Habitat teenager develop an education plan to assist them in meeting specific tasks and timelines in order to graduate from high school and enroll in a college.
Elantra Cunningham is Top 10 in her class and a HOPE Scholar. She played on the varsity basketball and volleyball teams, is a member of the FCCLA community support club and the Youth Apprenticeship/Intern Group and attended the (after school) BEST Program. Elantra will be attending Albany State University and major in Early Childhood Education. She aspires to own and operate a daycare center.
Jasmine Redd is a HOPE Scholar, a varsity cheerleader, and a member of Interact Club. She participates in the UGA Leadership Group and is a member of the Youth Apprenticeship/Intern Group, is a peer mentor and tutor and attended the (after school) BEST Program. Jasmine will be attending Clark Atlanta University and major in Business Administration. She plans for a career in management in the health care industry.
All of the Habitat volunteers and Habitat families wish these accomplished young women great success in the pursuit of their higher education. Recent studies have shown that the benefits of living in a home often transcend decent shelter in that children of homeowners are:
— 25 percent more likely to graduate from high school
— 116 percent more likely to graduate from college
— 20 percent less likely to become teenage mothers
Congratulations Elantra and Jasmine!
