Vacation Reading Program coming to Green County Library
Published 8:00 am Wednesday, May 12, 2010
A wise educator once said that if your child has read a thousand books of any type by the time he or she graduates from high school, they will be successful in college. When the official school term is over for the year the Friends of the Greene County Library start their Vacation Reading Program. The “Friends” are trying to encourage all children to read, read, read.
Children register for the program and record the books as they read them. Prizes are awarded for every child who reaches their particular goal. One of the things the “Friends” stress is that this is the time to read for fun. This is when you can explore all those books you don’t have time for during the school year. The library also stocks multiple copies of the books on the school system’s recommended book list with titles appropriate for each age group.
To bolster the Reading Program the “Friends” sponsor activities at the Library for different age groups. There is a story-time for the pre-kindergarten children. The elementary students are treated to entertainers such as a magician, the reptile guy, a musical storyteller, etc. The teenagers have several craft projects. And even the adults can do scrapbooking while their children are occupied elsewhere. This all culminates in a pizza party and prizes.
More than 513 children and 227 adults attended last summer’s program and 2,347 books were read. And best of all, this is free to everyone.
Starting May 27 at 1 p.m. and continuing on Thursdays through the month of June children of all ages will “Make a Splash” at the Greene County Library. And best of all they will read, read, read.
Enroll your child now by visiting the library and registering.
