Greene County High School students lend a helping hand

On Saturday morning, the echo of student voices could be heard through the halls of Greene County High School as student athletes, Dreamers and BEST students gave up a part of their weekend to help those less fortunate by volunteering with the Greensboro Food Distribution.

Volunteering a few hours each month during the distribution is an excellent opportunity for students to earn needed community service hours, explained GCHS interim principal DeeDee Mercier. At GCHS, all students enrolled in any social studies class must complete the minimum five hour requirement.

“Our students are not only earning community service hours, they are giving back to their community and helping others less fortunate,” Mercier said.

One group in particular Mercier was happy to see helping at the distribution Saturday morning was the high school’s basketball team. “During the regular season, these students have played games on Friday nights, returned home late, and although tired were up early on Saturday to participate in the distribution. In some instances, they played again on Saturday, after the distribution,” Mercier explained.

The Greensboro Food Distribution is sponsored by the Rotary Club. Distributions are held the third Saturday of every month in the Commons area at Greene County High School.
