The time to think about fall planting is now. The first thing to do is develop a plan for the area that you want to tackle initially, whether it’s an island, foundation plantings, deck, patio or whatever area needs attention. You can have our landscape designer come by and draw up a plan for you. Another option is to take a few pictures and measurements of the area and bring them to the garden center so our garden professionals can help you with your project. Decide what you would like in these particular areas, whether it is trees, shrubs, flowering plants, such as seasonal color, perennials, plants with foliage color, evergreens, ornamental grasses or different types of sod.
A good way to get ideas for you new landscape area is to visit the garden center and view all the different types of plants available. Study the different growth habits of all the plants that you are interested in. You may want to take a few pictures of them to take home and envision where they could fit into your landscaping. Consider using different foliage shapes when planting close together so that each plant will be noticed instead of blending together. Try placing shade trees in large open areas, then plant ‘under story’ trees like dogwood or red buds around them. Think about adding a berm and raised beds to add more interest. Explore all the unique possibilities for your landscape. Make this fall the time to create the look you’ve always wanted in your yard.
Happy gardening.
