On March 25, Alla and Charles Campbell attended the 78th Reunion of Honor Ceremony on the island of Iwo Jima. This commemoration occurs only once a year and remembers and memorializes those young men who gave their lives during the terrible campaign for the island in World War II. Notable speakers were the grandson of Gen. Tadamichi Kuribayashi, who led the 22,000 Japanese who defended the island and Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Ambassador to Japan. There also were seven survivors of the Iwo Jima battle and several WWII veterans in attendance. ‘This is an amazing memory of the terrible battle and lives lost. However, the United States and Japan have established a very good relationship and I believe the Reunion of Honor Ceremony strengthens this friendship and bond. As I think back on all the places I have been, Iwo Jima will occupy a very special place in my heart,’ says Alla Campbell. Campbell is pictured with the American flag on Iwo Jima’s Red Beach with Mt. Suribachi in the background.
