Lake Oconee Fishing Forecast, April 17, 2014

Published 8:00 am Monday, April 21, 2014

Lake Conditions – The lake is stained in many areas but clearing is occurring.

Lake Water Temperature – 62-66 degrees and rising.

Largemouth Bass – GOOD – Fish have moved into coves and creeks as the fish are beginning to spawn. Fish are in both pre-spawn and spawning stages and can be found in any of the main lake and creek coves. They are shallow around wood structures like seawalls, docks and brushpiles in those locations. Best lures have been spinnerbaits, jigs, soft plastics (lizards, Trick worms) and small crankbaits (Shad Rap/square bill) around any wood structure. The shad spawn will begin later this month.

Crappie – GOOD –The crappie bite is very good on jigs that are pushed or pulled. Adding a minnow is productive right now and good catches are also being made by anglers shooting jigs under lake docks. The first wave of spawning is about to be completed but a second wave will occur around the April full moon. Good numbers of fish will remain in the coves until late April or early May.

Hybrid/Striped/White Bass – GOOD – The fish have moved up the rivers and in front of the Wallace Dam in a failed attempt to spawn. Good fish are at the dam with live bait being the best choice for catching those fish. The fish will soon start moving out to open water.

Catfish – GOOD – Some big catfish have moved into the larger main lake coves. The catfish spawn will likely begin in late April at about the same time the annual shad spawn occurs. Smaller catfish can be caught on worms and other catfish bait but the larger catfish will fall best for live bait, cut bait or bream heads.
