- More than 30 young people have been busy putting together the production of ‘Working: A Musical’ this summer as part of the Broadway Intensive, a collaboration between The Plaza Arts Center and The Arts Barn.
For four years, The Plaza Arts Center and The Arts Barn have collaborated on a two-week summer program called the Broadway Intensive. There are more than 30 young people involved in this year’s production, making it the biggest cast and crew for the Broadway Intensive. This year’s production is “Working: A Musical.”
Ethan Poole, an assistant stage manager for the production says that he loves being around the people most.
“The thing I enjoy most about being a part of the working production is the amazing people you get the chance to work with,” Poole says. “The professional atmosphere means we are super productive and have fun while doing it.”
The show is particularly special because it involves the every day person. The every day person who works, and we can all relate to having a job and the relationships that come along with it. Working: A Musical takes place in the modern day and highlights truck drivers, delivery drivers, UPS workers, housewives, waitresses and so many more jobs.
Based on the book “Working” by Studs Terkel, the musical (and book) explores the relationships that come out of working day in and day out. The relationships that form when a dad teaches his son what a job is. The relationships that form when a mom brings her daughter to her work for a day. It truly examines what it’s like to be an American in the workforce.
“I enjoy hearing all the stories from the people in the script and bringing their words to life. I can’t wait for opening night for everyone to see our hard work,” said cast member Sha’Kecia Mitchell of Putnam County.
Elizabeth Brosman of Milledgeville has been in the Broadway Intensive Program since its inception. She says “my favorite part of the production is having a place to push myself and fail without judgement.”
Tickets are on sale now at plazacenter.org for the July performances.
Performances take place July 12-14 and July 18-21.
“This summer intensive has given me a family, outside of my own, that I can escape the hustle and bustle of life to create some theatre magic,” said Nathan Smith of Morgan County, who plays Anthony in the musical.
