The creation of a Veterans Wall of Honor Park being built about a block from the county courthouse in Eatonton is underway and will be completed and dedicated at a special ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11.
An initiative of the Putnam County posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Joint Project Team has been working since last Nov. 11 to build this dramatic recognition of the county’s veterans, or whose families live in the county. All of the necessary funds to build the park are being raised from hundreds of individuals, business entities and foundations as no government grants or awards have been sought.
The park will include six large walls bearing brick tiles with the names, service and dates of service of individual Veterans, a 10 foot high by 27 foot long head wall bearing the words: “Putnam County Veterans Wall of Honor Park,” and the crests of the five armed forces. Appropriate spotlight and soft lighting, and landscaping with several park benches and seven flag poles will be installed. The Park also will include a spacious area where appropriate ceremonies and public events can be conducted on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Patriots Day and other occasions each year.
