Bark for Life raises funds in downtown Greensboro
Dogs and their owners had a fun time in downtown Greensboro this past Saturday as they enjoyed the 2nd American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life event. The event, produced by the Greensboro Better Hometown Program and the American Cancer Society, welcomed owners and their pets to “use their paw for a good cause” in downtown Greensboro! Bark For Life raises awareness and funds for the fight against human and animal cancers with all proceeds and donations going to Relay For Life in support of the American Cancer Society. This canine-friendly event was successful in raising more than $1300.
Bark For Life kicked off with a pet parade down Main Street as several dozen proud pets allowed their owners to come along with them in the parade.
Vendors and local organizations lined up on Main Street as well as the courthouse lawn to celebrate this year’s event. Vendors participating included: Harmony Pet Resort, Petopia, Beth’s Boarding & Grooming, Smith Family Chiropractic, JumpGym, and TenderCare Clinic. Photographer Kami Branyan of KJ Photo Design was on hand taking photos of pets and their owners. A silent auction with items such as grooming and boarding was part of the event. A vendor selling used book was also on hand.
Downtown shops and restaurants joined in the fun. Visitors “shopped for a cause” at Dreamcatcher’s Antiques, Genuine Georgia, Traditions Old and New, Morning Glory’s on Main, and Greensboro Jewelers.
Two local bands Musengo and Rhyme or Treason from Athens, Georgia were on stage singing favorite tunes throughout the evening.
Greensboro’s own Chip Lyness and Lake Oconee’s Dock 103.9 kept the evening hopping at the event main stage with dog-friendly tunes, games and contests! There were prizes for best costume, biggest and smallest dog, longest tongue, longest and shortest tail, best dog kisser, best trick, and a dog/owner look-a-like contest and more.
Dog agility demonstrations on the Court House Lawn were presented by local trainer, Shelly Thompson. Shelley’s talented pups maneuvered several agility elements including a tunnel, see-saw and more with skill and ease!
The Oconee Regional Human Society and Circle of Friends Animal Society were on hand with pets looking for humans to adopt.
Dogs and humans alike enjoyed a cool summer evening in downtown Greensboro for a good cause!
