PAPA hosts public auditions for ‘Steel Magnolias’
EATONTON, Ga. —The Plaza Alliance for the Performing Arts (PAPA) will hold auditions for Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling on Sunday, Feb. 4 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and also on Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in The Plaza Arts Center theater.
The cast consists of six females, ages 19 to 60s.
PAPA welcomes newcomers, and the directors are always willing to work with those who might be cast in this play and are willing to work hard to learn. The women in this play are witty, intelligent, and above all are real people with interesting personality traits.
They have a love of life and take on its challenges with gusto.
Rehearsals are typically three times per week and are scheduled according to the work and activity schedules of the cast and directors. Late evening rehearsals are avoided as much as possible.
“Steel Magnolias,” written by Robert Harling, was first performed on stage in 1987 in New York.
The play had great appeal, the rights were quickly purchased, and the movie of the same name hit theaters in 1989.
The story takes place in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done.
The characters are right out of a southern community of close friends who know each other well enough to speak their minds.
The play will be directed by Dennis and Dottie McClain, long-time PAPA directors and producers.
The performance dates are scheduled for April 19- 21, 26 and 27 at The Plaza Arts Center.
