While flood-relief supplies pour into Houston, precious cargo has been leaving by the truckload thanks to the extraordinary efforts of country star Miranda Lambert and her MuttNation Foundation.

At the request of the Humane Society of the United States, Lambert — who is from Lindale, Texas — deployed her MuttNation team, buses and trucks to gather and evacuate adoptable pets from overcrowded shelters in Houston and the surrounding area in order to make room for animals affected by Hurricane Harvey. Dogs who were already in shelters before the deadly storm were relocated so that displaced pets in Houston could be housed and more easily reunited with their owners.

Rare Country has been following the country star’s heartwarming mission.

Lambert, who has seven rescue dogs herself, worked alongside volunteers from her foundation to transport more than 230 shelter pets to other facilities across the country where they would have a better chance of being adopted. Help also came from Wings of Rescue, which flew 120 dogs to shelters in Wisconsin and Illinois. Lambert and her team are also doing what is necessary to make sure that the animals they have rescued are getting the health care they need.

A video posted to Lambert’s Instagram page shows just how tireless the star and her MuttNation crew were in their efforts to make space available for displaced animals waiting to be reconnected with their families following the hurricane and its resulting flooding. The video showed Lambert and her team literally doing the dirty work, scrubbing out carrier kennels for transporting the dogs.

“Thank you to everyone for the support and prayers. We are so thankful to have been invited to help our furry friends in this time of sorrow,” Lambert wrote on Sept. 1. “We will continue to do whatever we can to help. Continued prayers for Texas.”

One of the puppies Lambert picked up in Texas got a personal escort by the star back to Nashville, where William Lee Golden of legendary country group the Oak Ridge Boys adopted it. 

MuttNation Foundation was started by Lambert and her mother, Bev Lambert, in 2009 with the mission of promoting the adoption of shelter pets. The group works hand in hand with private and municipal animal shelters to provide financial support, operate a national transport network and host high profile pet adoption events across the country. Lambert, who has been a frequent shelter volunteer, adopted her first pup, Delilah, as a road companion when she started touring.
