Injured soldiers fish Oconee
The Reynolds Veterans Association and the Lake Oconee Anglers hosted over 20 injured soldiers and their families to a day of fishing on Lake Oconee. COL Billy Gavan, USA (Ret) a member of both organizations organized the day on the lake and a lunch for all at the Reynolds Plantation Marina. “We had been discussing having these injured young men and women come be our guests for a day of fishing for quite some time”, said COL Gavin. “Other fishing clubs around the country have worked with other military and VA hospitals to get these injured young people outside and on the water. This mild October weather was perfect and the fish seemed to have gotten the message as well”. There were pontoon boats available for those who had injuries that prevented them from getting into a traditional bass boat as well as some bass boats that sped some of the anglers to the “spots” where COL Gavin and others knew there would be fish. In addition to many members bringing their boats and equipment, several local guides joined in for the fun. Dave James, therapist from the Active Duty Rehab Unit at the Augusta VA, said , “This was one of the highlights of the year. It was so great for the anglers to not only take out our young soldiers, but they eagerly told all to bring any family members who were in Augusta visiting”. The Reynolds Veterans Association has actively supported the rehab program of the active duty unit for 4 years. RVA President Larry Hone commented that ”Our efforts are directed to any program that aids the rehabilitation from the injuries sustained by these men and women who are defending our country. Fishing and golf instruction are two things we can do here at Lake Oconee. Our other endeavors have provided numerous pieces of recreation equipment as well as many other items that speed up the recovery process. We are thrilled to have them with us.”
