ON THE SCREEN: Egerton makes mediocre ‘Robin Hood’ entertaining for all
Directed by: Otto Bathurst
Rated: PG-13
Runtime: 1:56
In this slightly modernized tale of Robin Hood, Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx team up as the stealth crusader Robin of Loxley (Egerton) and his relentless commander, Petit Jean (Foxx). The two war-hardened men decide to organize a revolt against the corrupt English rulers. Oh, and they decide to rob from the rich and give to the poor, of course.
“Robin Hood” is currently categorized as “rotten” on Rotten Tomatoes with an unforgiving score of 16 percent, but don’t let this score fool you: It is actually quite an entertaining flick. Yes, it has many issues with its pace; the middle of the film is extremely slow, and also with its lousy writing that doesn’t provide enough dramatic dialogue and “all is lost” moments. But if you just watch the film with zero expectations, you will find it to be quite intriguing and fun.
The film’s entertainment value undoubtedly comes from the its leading actor, Taron Egerton, whose natural, charismatic charm carries the film from start to finish. Jamie Foxx also gives a great performance, but it is one that audiences are not quite used to seeing from Foxx in that his character is very serious and even grim at times. Overall, there are quite a few moments of humorous banter between these two main characters, as well as a couple of epic action sequences that add to the plot’s adventurous vibe.
“Robin Hood” is by no means an award-winning flick, nor is it one that you will probably remember a year from now, but it is an entertaining film for the whole family to see and enjoy this holiday season. What I thoroughly enjoyed about the film was that it didn’t stick to just one genre. Instead, it touched on many different genres, including drama, action, romance, comedy… you name it. Also, we have heard this story a thousand times, so the film was never going to be amazing in the first place. My advice is to take the film for what it is worth and go see it without holding it to any standards. If anything, go see it for the eye candy, also known as Taron Egerton. Ladies, trust me on this one! I give this movie a 6 out of 10.
