Oct. 15

Georgia College’s three choral ensembles will present a combined concert at 7:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church on Liberty Street. “We Sing” features pieces that were written to express the thoughts and feelings of humanity; these include arrangements of protest songs, folksongs, African American spirituals, sea chanties and more. Women’s Ensemble, University Chorus and Max Noah Singers will perform settings from countries such as the U.S., Kenya, Korea, Latvia, New Zealand and Singapore. Choral conductors include Dr. Jennifer Flory, Dr. Dana Gorzelany-Mostak and Allison Ryder. The choirs will be joined by Dr. Lev Ryabinin and Dr. Hue Jang on piano and other special guests. A $5 donation is encouraged. All proceeds benefit music scholarships or the GC Department of Music through GCSU Foundation, Inc. The ViMaDeAn Duo will be guest artists at 7:30 p.m. in Max Noah Recital Hall at Georgia College & State University. The concert, “Based on Actual Events,” will feature violinist Anastasia Petrunina and percussionist and Denis Petrunin. Petrunina was born in Ukraine and Petrunin is from Russia. The duo performs and conducts workshops worldwide with recent appearances in Brazil, Russia and France. Included in the program are Anton Prischepa’s “Based on Actual Events,” Salina Fisher’s “Komorebi,” Harold Arlen’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and Emmanuel Sejourne’s “Attraction.” This concert will also be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/GCMusicDepartment. “An American Sampler”—a program examining the way stories are told in contemporary American theatrical music—will be at 7:30 p.m. in Max Noah Recital Hall. Guest artists Jonathan Price, tenor, and pianist Timothy Renner will perform contemporary classical art songs and musical theatre written by American composers. Some feature stories set mostly in New York City by composers and poets Tom Cipullo, Billy Collins and Stephen Sondheim. Others are inspired by the American South, featuring lyricists like Jason Robert Brown and Adam Guettel. Come sway to tunes like Cipullo and Collins’ “Another Reason Why I Don’t Keep a Gun in the House,” Sondheim’s “Anyone Can Whistle” and Brown’s “Old Red Hills of Home.” This concert will also be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/GCMusicDepartment.
